INDOOR MEETINGS
Our indoor meetings
are held between Ocober and March at the National Trust's Dapdune Wharf, Wharf Road, Guildford, GU1
4RR.
Wharf Road is off Woodbridge Road, on the southern side of the cricket ground.
Go to the end of Wharf Road, through the National Trust gate on the right (if
the gate is locked someone will be along soon to open it), along a road over
speed bumps to the car park on the left. We meet in the
tearoom there. Meetings start at 8pm.

- 19 October 2023 - AGM and update on Surrey Bat Group's 2023 survey and monitoring work
- 16 November 2023 - The diversity of bats: an exploration of form and function, Abby Packham, BCT Bat Groups Officer
- 21 December 2023 - Talk on the rare bats of Sussex, followed by a short Christmas batty quiz - with prizes! Daniel Whitby, Bat Conservation & Research Unit; Director, AEWC Ltd
- 18 January 2024 - Passive acoustic monitoring of bats, Dr Ella Browning, Research Scientist, BCT and UCL Division of Biosciences
- 15 February 2024 - A new study on the effects of lighting on roosting bats, Dr Thomas Foxley, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Bath
- 21 March 2024 - Surveying using environmental DNA, Dr Joanne Littlefair, Lecturer in Biological Sciences, Queen Mary University of London
BAT SURVEYS
The group usually undertakes a
number of bat surveys each year, including emergence surveys, trapping and
radio tracking. Members will be emailed with dates.
Note that anyone
attending surveys involving close contact with bats will likely be expected to
be fully vaccinated against Covid and to have a negative LFT within the
preceding 24 hours, as well as wearing an FP2 or FP3 face mask when near bats.
BAT BOX CHECKS
The group has a number of well established bat box schemes in the county and we
undertake checks of these periodically in spring and autumn. Details will be sent to those on our e-mail list.
HIBERNATION SITE CHECKS
During January and February we carry out a programme of hibernation site checks at various venues throughout the county. For conservation reasons places on these visits are extremely limited but all members are welcome to apply: details will be circulated to members in December.
BAT WALKS
Surrey Bat Group leads a number of
bat walks each summer, often for organisations such as the National Trust. They
are usually held between May and September.
Members of the public will
usually need to book in advance, and they may be charged for attendance, but
bat group members with detectors are encouraged to come along and help out.
PUBLIC EDUCATION
In addition to bat walks, we carry out various activities such as promoting bat conservation at various open days and giving talks to schools, scout groups and various societies. Help is always welcomed with these: we will contact all members by email with details of these as they arise.
TRAINING
We run a beginner's bat detector training evening each April, along with occasional training in other skills such as radio tracking and use of night vision equipment.
